Safety First: Always turn off and unplug the machine before touching the group head or portafilter. Allow the machine to cool fully before troubleshooting to avoid burns or damage.

Overview

If you are unable to remove or insert the portafilter smoothly, the issue is typically caused by coffee residue buildup, a dry or worn group gasket, incorrect portafilter alignment, or an overfilled filter basket.

This article covers the following issues:

  • Portafilter is stuck and cannot be removed
  • Difficulty removing the portafilter
  • Difficulty inserting or locking the portafilter

Symptoms

  • Portafilter is stuck and will not twist out after brewing.
  • Portafilter feels unusually tight or rough when twisting.
  • Portafilter will not insert or lock into position.

Cause

  • Coffee oils or residue buildup around the group gasket.
  • Incorrect portafilter alignment.
  • Overfilling the filter basket.
  • A dry, hardened, or worn group gasket.

Troubleshooting Steps

Portafilter is Stuck and Cannot Be Removed

  1. Power off and unplug the machine.
    • Do not attempt to twist or force the portafilter handle while the machine is under pressure.
  2. Allow the machine to release pressure.
    • Wait 1–2 minutes after brewing to allow the machine to vent internal pressure automatically.
    • You may hear a soft click or hiss as the pressure releases.
  3. Allow the group head to cool completely.
    • Heat can cause the metal group head to expand and grip the portafilter more tightly.
  4. Gently twist the portafilter to remove it.
    • Once the group head is cool, hold the portafilter handle firmly and twist it counterclockwise to unlock.
    • Do not apply excessive force. Stop if the portafilter remains stuck.
    • If the portafilter begins to move, continue twisting gently until it releases.
  5. Check the group gasket.
    • Look into the group head and inspect the white or yellow silicone gasket.
    • The gasket should be soft, flexible, and evenly seated.
    • If the gasket is cracked, dry, hardened, or damaged, contact Customer Support for assistance or a replacement gasket.

Difficulty Removing the Portafilter

  1. Power off, unplug, and allow the machine to cool.
    • Turn off and unplug the machine.
    • Allow the machine to cool until the group head is cool to the touch.
  2. Allow the machine to release pressure.
    • Wait 1–2 minutes after brewing to allow the machine to vent internal pressure automatically.
    • You may hear a soft click or hiss as the pressure releases.
  3. Gently twist the portafilter to remove it.
    • Once pressure is released and the group head is cool, hold the portafilter handle firmly and twist it counterclockwise.
  4. Clean the group head and gasket.
    • Use a damp cloth or group head brush to remove coffee residue and buildup from the gasket and surrounding rim.
    • Wipe the portafilter rim clean before reinserting it.
  5. Check the group gasket.
    • Inspect the gasket in the group head. It should be soft, flexible, and evenly seated.
    • If the gasket is cracked, dry, hardened, or damaged, contact Customer Support for assistance or a replacement gasket.

Difficulty Inserting or Locking the Portafilter

  1. Ensure the filter basket is properly seated.
    • Confirm that the filter basket is correctly snapped into the portafilter and is not tilted or loose.
  2. Check the group head for obstructions.
    • Inspect the group head and remove any coffee residue, buildup, or debris.
  3. Do not overfill the filter basket.
    • Too much coffee in the filter basket can make the portafilter difficult to lock into the group head.
    • If supplied with the machine, use the Razor Trimming Tool to confirm the dose is correct.
  4. Inspect and clean the portafilter rim.
    • Wipe the rim completely clean of coffee grounds or residue that could interfere with insertion or sealing.
  5. Insert and lock the portafilter correctly.
    • Hold the portafilter handle slightly to the left of centre, approximately at the 7 or 8 o'clock position, when aligning it with the group head.
    • Align the portafilter lugs with the grooves in the group head.
    • Rotate the portafilter clockwise toward the centre until snug.
    • If the portafilter will not turn into position, stop and recheck the alignment. Forcing it can damage the portafilter lugs or group gasket.
  6. Check the group gasket.
    • If insertion remains difficult after cleaning and checking alignment, the gasket may be dry, hardened, worn, or damaged.
    • Contact Customer Support for assistance or a replacement gasket if needed.

Outcome & Next Steps

After cleaning the group head and portafilter and checking the alignment and group gasket, the portafilter should insert and remove smoothly. If the issue continues, the group gasket may need to be replaced or the machine may require service. Contact customer support for assistance before applying excessive force.
