Choosing the right beans

Share with friends

Welcome to Beans 101, your guide to selecting the right products for your Breville Barista Express®. In this video, our host chats with a specialty coffee roaster, Paul Geshos, Founder and Owner of Mecca Coffee, about the right beans needed to produce beautiful third wave coffee at home. First, he speaks about coffee freshness and why it's best to use beans 5-30 days after the 'roasted on' date. Coffee beans from various origins and climates will have different flavor notes and needs to bring out their best character. Then Geshos discusses coffee origin by breaking down the key differences between African and South American-grown espresso beans. South American beans are low-acidity, with a medium to heavy body, and are often served with milk. African beans generally produce a more delicate, acidic brew, and are often served without milk. Our roaster also covers the topic of blended varietals so you can experiment with your own blends at home. Once you've learned the basics of coffee beans and blending, you will be able to fine-tune your homebrews to your taste. From there, an endless coffee journey awaits.
