An espresso machine is a sophisticated piece of equipment that features numerous electrical components and parts. Malfunctions can happen, but they're often easy to fix at home.
The key is knowing what various troubleshooting issues mean, why they arise, and how to either prevent or solve them.
We'll cover some of the most common espresso machine problems, along with simple fixes you can perform on your own.
Keeping up with maintenance helps ensure your espresso machine continues to brew high-quality coffee while extending its lifespan. Part of this is cleaning your espresso machine regularly, washing and rinsing certain parts daily, and periodically descaling the unit. But another critical component of maintenance is addressing issues as they arise.
On the other hand, not staying on top of maintenance can result in inconsistent flavor, weak espresso machine pressure, or breakdowns. Troubleshooting will help prevent pricey repairs (or the cost of a replacement) and allow your machine to continue brewing café-quality shots.
The most common espresso machine problems include issues with coffee extraction, water pressure, heating, steam wand functionality, power supply, and control panel malfunctions. Let's discuss these in more detail and how to fix them.
Espresso shots flowing too fast or too slow out of the portafilter is likely due to the wrong espresso grind size. If they're coming out too fast, try using a finer grind setting. If the flow is too slow, it may be that the grind is too fine or that the dose is too high (meaning you can use slightly less ground coffee).
Channeling is when the pressurized water flows quickly through weaker spots in the tamped coffee puck. This would resemble multiple thin streams of espresso flowing out of the portafilter, which can lead to uneven extraction and inconsistent taste. To avoid this, make sure the grounds are spread evenly in the portafilter using a distribution tool, tamp the espresso straight down (without any tilting), and don't tap it after tamping.
When your brewed espresso smells great but doesn't have the bold flavour of concentrated coffee, it could be because your beans aren’t fresh or you waited too long between grinding and brewing. Within just a few minutes of grinding, the beans release a substantial amount of their lipids and fats into the air through CO2, which creates the aroma of coffee while diminishing the taste. For best results, always grind your coffee right before brewing espresso, and clean the grinder chute regularly to make sure there aren't stale particles remaining.
An espresso maker with low or inconsistent water pressure could be a sign of scale buildup inside the reservoir or internal tubes. Try descaling your espresso machine based on the manufacturer's instructions with its recommended cleaning solution.
If no water is coming through the machine or there is a weakened flow, it may need to be descaled, as mentioned above. This can help remove blockages in the intake valve. Additionally, ensure that the water reservoir is filled and properly positioned on its dock. You can also try running a blackflush cycle.
If there's air in the water circuit, you'll want to prime the circuit. First, fill the water reservoir to the maximum fill line and ensure it's placed correctly on its dock. Next, dispense hot water (as if you were using the machine to make tea). Continue dispensing hot water, filling multiple cups if necessary, until a consistent flow is achieved. You can also try repeatedly removing and replacing the water tank to try to "break" the air blockage.
When an espresso machine isn't heating water properly or you're getting lukewarm shots, there's a good chance of mineral buildup in the reservoir or pump. Descaling can solve the problem. If not, it could be an issue with the thermostat or heating element, in which case you might need a replacement part for the pump or professional assistance.
If the milk steamer wand isn't producing any steam or is making a loud noise and not working properly, it could be clogged. Inspect your coffee maker and see if the noise is coming from built-up milk residue or other debris. To prevent this, be sure to clean it after each use to remove milk residue.
To fix it, first place a wet cloth over the tip and open the valve to purge any existing milk and debris. Then wash the wand and tip thoroughly with hot water and a special cleaning tool, such as a steam wand needle or narrow brush. You can use a descaling solution or a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water.
If your coffee machine won't turn on, check that it's plugged in. If so, try plugging it into a different outlet or test the outlet with another electronic device. You can also try turning the circuit breaker off and back on to reset it. If you're still experiencing issues, check if the power cord is damaged and ensure the water reservoir is seated properly.
It could be an issue with internal wiring or a fuse. In that case, get in touch with the manufacturer about having a technician repair the machine or replace a bad part.
If the touchpad screen or buttons on your espresso machine aren't responding, try unplugging and replugging it into the outlet or turning it off and back on. If that doesn't work, contact the manufacturer for troubleshooting support or consider seeking a repair from an expert.
As noted, regular maintenance is the best way to avoid these problems and ensure your machine produces espresso shots with powerful flavor and thick crema.
Clean the portafilter, basket, grouphead, drip tray, and steam wand after each use. You should also descale your coffee machine every one to three months, depending on how often it's used. To prevent mineral buildup and optimize the flavor of your espresso, use filtered or reverse-osmosis water—with a moderate (but not too high) mineral content.
