Applies To
All Breville drip coffee machines.
Issue
The coffee tastes lukewarm immediately after brewing.
Possible Causes
- Mineral buildup inside the heating element can prevent water from reaching optimal brewing temperature.
- A cold mug or carafe can absorb heat from the freshly brewed coffee, lowering its temperature.
Tools and Materials Required
- Breville Descaling Solution
Procedure
| Step | Instructions |
|---|---|
| 1 | Descale the machine Run a full descale cycle using Breville Descaling Solution according to your model’s instructions. This removes mineral buildup that can reduce water heating efficiency. |
| 2 | Preheat the carafe Before brewing, run a short brew cycle using just water to warm the carafe. This helps retain heat during your actual brew cycle. |
| 3 | Preheat your mug Fill your mug with hot water for a few seconds, then discard the water before pouring your coffee. A warm mug prevents temperature loss. |
| 4 | Adjust brew temperature (if available) If using a Precision Brewer or Luxe Brewer model, you can increase the brew temperature in the Custom Settings menu to achieve a hotter brew. |
How to Evaluate Brew Temperature (Temperature Test)
Tool needed: A digital instant-read thermometer for accurate results.
| Step | Instructions |
|---|---|
| 1 | Warm-up rinse Fill the water tank to the 4 cups mark. Start a brew cycle with no coffee, no carafe in place, allowing the water to dispense into the brew basket. When the display shows that 4 cups have brewed into the basket, cancel the cycle, remove the brew basket, and discard the hot water. |
| 2 | Temperature test Refill to 4 cups and repeat the same steps (water only, no carafe). When the display indicates 4 cups have brewed into the basket, immediately measure the water temperature in the brew basket using the digital instant-read thermometer. Hold the probe steady for a few seconds to stabilize the reading. |
| 3 | Expected result The measured temperature should be between 180°F and 190°F. Readings within this range indicate normal brew water temperature performance. |
Quick Facts
- Expected coffee temperature when brewing in Single Serve mode: 150°F–170°F (65°C–77°C)
- Expected coffee temperature when brewing into the Carafe: 160°F–190°F (71°C–88°C)
- Recommended drinking temperature for best flavor and aroma: 140°F–158°F (60°C–70°C)
Resolution
Descaling and preheating the carafe or mug typically resolve issues with lukewarm coffee. Adjusting temperature settings (where available) can further optimize brewing results. If the temperature test consistently reads below 180°F, the machine may require service.
