Overview
If your espresso extraction stops after approximately 3–5 seconds, resulting in little or no water or espresso from the brew head, follow the troubleshooting steps below.
The 1 Cup or 2 Cup cycle may end much sooner than expected. In some cases, the hot water or steam function may also stop early.
Symptoms
- The 1 Cup or 2 Cup extraction stops after approximately 3–5 seconds.
- Little or no water or espresso flows from the brew head.
- The hot water or steam function may also stop after only a few seconds.
Cause
Possible causes include insufficient water supply, an incorrectly installed water tank, restricted water flow through the coffee or filter basket, a restricted water filter, an unprimed water system, a changed extraction setting, or mineral buildup inside the machine.
Procedure
- Check the water tank
- Check the water level in the water tank.
- If the water is below the minimum line, refill the tank with fresh water.
- Remove and reinstall the water tank.
- Make sure the tank is fully seated and securely installed.
An empty or incorrectly installed water tank can prevent the machine from receiving enough water.
- Test the water flow without the portafilter
- Remove the portafilter from the brew head.
- Make sure the water tank is filled and securely installed.
- Press the 2 Cup button or start a double-shot brew cycle.
- Check whether water flows from the brew head and whether the cycle continues for longer than 3–5 seconds.
If water flows normally:
- Adjust the grind slightly coarser.
- Make sure you are using the correct amount of coffee for the filter basket.
- If your machine includes a precision dose trimming tool, use it to check the dose.
- Make sure the coffee is evenly distributed and tamped according to the instructions for your machine.
- Check the filter basket for blocked openings and clean it if needed.
A grind that is too fine, too much coffee, excessive tamping, or a blocked filter basket can restrict water flow through the coffee.
If the cycle still stops after 3–5 seconds: Continue to the next step.
- Remove the water filter and test again
- Remove the water tank from the machine.
- Remove the water filter.
- Refill the water tank with fresh water to the MAX line.
- Reinstall the water tank without the water filter.
- Make sure the water tank is fully seated and securely installed.
- Leave the portafilter removed.
- Press the 2 Cup button or start a double-shot brew cycle.
- Check whether the cycle continues for longer than 3–5 seconds.
If the machine operates normally without the water filter: Replace the water filter with a new one before returning the machine to normal use.
If the machine still stops after 3–5 seconds: Continue to the next step.
- Prime the water system
- Leave the portafilter removed.
- Run the 2 Cup brew function.
- If your machine has a hot water function, run hot water for approximately 30 seconds.
- Repeat the water-only brew cycle as needed and check whether normal water flow returns.
Priming can be particularly helpful if the machine is new, the water tank recently ran empty, or the machine has not been used for an extended period.
- Test the hot water and steam functions
- Run the hot water function and check whether it continues to operate normally.
- Run the steam function and check whether it continues to operate normally.
If the brew head, hot water, and steam functions all have little or no output or stop after only a few seconds, continue with the steps below.
- Reset the extraction setting, if applicable
- If water flows normally but the 1 Cup or 2 Cup cycle consistently ends after only a few seconds, the programmed extraction setting may have been changed.
- Reset the extraction setting or restore the machine's factory settings according to the instructions for your model.
Reset procedures vary by machine. Refer to your instruction manual for the correct procedure.
- Descale the machine
- If water flow remains restricted or your machine is due for descaling, complete the descale cycle for your specific model.
- Use a descaling solution or powder designed for espresso machines.
- Follow the complete descale and rinse procedure specified for your machine.
Mineral buildup inside the machine can restrict water flow and affect brewing, hot water, and steam performance.
Outcome & Next Steps
If the extraction still stops after approximately 3–5 seconds after checking the water tank, testing without the portafilter, testing without the water filter, priming the water system, testing the hot water and steam functions, resetting the extraction setting when applicable, and completing the recommended descale process, contact customer support or an authorized service provider for further assistance.
Notes & Tips
- Cleaning and descaling are different maintenance processes.
- A cleaning tablet or cleaning cycle removes coffee oils and residue. It does not replace the descaling process used to remove mineral buildup.
- Reset and priming procedures can vary by model. Refer to the instruction manual for model-specific directions.
