Getting your first extraction right

The Americano is made by pouring an espresso shot over hot water for a voluminous, longer-lasting drink. Serve it black, or with a splash of milk. Let's see how it can be done with your Barista Express®.

Latte Art

You might find that, once you've nailed the perfect brew, you want to experiment with latte art. In this video, Professional Barista Leo Schmidt demonstrates the basics of latte art using perfectly textured milk. As Schmidt explains, latte art requires three basics: microfoam milk, expertly extracted espresso, and plenty of practice.

How to create latte art

If you want to make picture-perfect third wave specialty coffees, you need to learn the basics of milk texturing. That’s easy with the Barista Express®!
In this video, our host demonstrates how to manually texture milk for latte art and specialty drinks.

Now that you know how to use your Barista Express® machine, it’s time to enter the world of latte art. With the right combination of perfectly textured microfoam, well-extracted espresso, and the patience to practice, you can create hearts, rosettas, and tulips—but it all starts with 'The Dot.'

How to create latte art: the dot

Microfoam is crucial to all your favorite espresso drinks, like cappuccinos, flat whites, and lattes. It’s also the secret ingredient to beautiful latte art. In this video, our host demonstrates how you can make a latte art classic at home: 'The Heart.'

Cleaning Guides

In order to consistently produce high-quality cups, it’s important for you to regularly clean and maintain every part of their machine. In this video, our host shows you how to clean the portafilter and basket that came with your Barista Express®.

How to clean portafilter and filter basket

Like a barista, you’ll need to properly care for your machine to keep it in tip-top shape—and that means regularly cleaning every part.
In this video, our host explains how to clean the shower screen included with your Barista Express®. This is to avoid a buildup of coffee residue which can have a serious effect on your coffee’s flavor.

How to clean the shower screen

For the best-quality espresso, you must regularly clean and maintain your machine. In this video, our host demonstrates how to clean the drip tray and storage tray included with your Barista Express®.
You can do this during your regular clean, or when the drip tray floater reads “Empty Me.”

In this video tutorial, our host demonstrates how to properly clean the conical burrs on your grinder to ensure a perfect cup of brew, every single time.

While some maintenance is only occasionally necessary, there are some tasks you should do every time you use your machine—and purging your group head is one of them.
In this video, we show you how to purge your group head before use to ensure higher-quality results. The group head purge is vital to maintaining a great-tasting cup of coffee.

Although some parts of your Barista Express® only need occasional cleaning, some need to be maintained before or after every use.
The filter basket is one of those items. In this video, our host shows you how to perform a filter basket rinse after each brewing session. Doing this will avoid residual coffee buildup and promote a higher-quality extraction.

Filter basket rinse

Regular maintenance of your steam wand is crucial to the success of your lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites, and coffee art. Unlike some cleaning tasks, which you only need to do occasionally, you should clean your steam wand after every single use. This is to avoid unwanted buildup of milk residue. But don't worry, it's easy and straightforward!

Cleaning and unblocking the steam wand

The water filter included with your machine filters for 60 days or 10.6 gallons—at which point, you’ll need to replace the water filter. In this video, you will learn how to replace a used filter to ensure your coffee is kept at its best quality.

How to replace the water filter

It is essential to keep your tools clean so nothing interferes with the exquisite taste of your third-wave specialty coffee. We designed the Barista Express® with this in mind. It has a complete self-monitoring cleansing and descaling cycle built into the machine that will notify you when to perform the next cleaning cycle.

How to perform a cleaning cycle

Your Barista Express® is equipped with a water filter to remove minerals from the water, ensuring each cup of coffee you brew tastes great.
But minerals can build up in the heating elements of the espresso maker, so you’ll need to learn how to descale the machine, removing the hard water deposits from the system. See how it's done here!

How to perform a descale

A clear water backflush is an important part of the daily cleaning and maintenance of your machine. We recommend that you perform a clear water backflush after each brewing session to clean any loose grounds, coffee oils and other residues from the espresso machine.

How to perform a clear water backflush

To ensure your Barista Express® is always ready to steam your milk, we recommend cleaning and unblocking the steam wand after each use. Follow along with our video as we demonstrate this simple yet essential process.

Personalise the settings on your machine to fit you.

Customising Your Machine

Let us explain how to manually dose your coffee grounds to create a beautifully balanced cup of coffee. Once you’ve mastered dosing, you can easily create barista-level cappuccinos, flat whites, lattes, and more.

How to manually dose

As you get to know your Barista Express®, you’ll learn that a little fine-tuning can go a long way. In this video, our host demonstrates how to use the Barista Express®’s high-tech interface to customize your shot volume and extraction temperature as needed. This will ensure a consistently high-quality brew with great taste, every single time.
